42Gears Deprecating Support for TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1
jul 22, 2021 | 42Gears Team
What is TLS?
As discussed in one of our earlier articles, Transport Layer Security (TLS) is a cryptographic protocol that encrypts communication between servers and web browsers. It is an Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) standard that helps prevent tampering, eavesdropping and message forgery. TLS is the successor to Secure Sockets Layer (SSL).
Why upgrade to TLS 1.2 is important?
The encryption keys used during a given communication session are based on a negotiation (called the TLS handshake) that takes place between the server and web browser right at the beginning of the session. However, all TLS versions before TLS 1.2 have been explicitly identified to be vulnerable to many known attacks. As such, they are no longer considered to be a strong form of encryption. And this means that any communication using the TLS 1.0 or TLS 1.1 protocols are not as secure as they used to be.
Why is 42Gears deprecating support for TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1?
Security has always been one of our topmost priorities. 42Gears enforces strict security measures and follows industry best practices to safeguard data. As such, we use stronger and more reliable encryption techniques than TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 to protect customer data. In addition, the PCI Standard Security Council has now mandated that service providers processing or transmitting credit card data enable TLS 1.2 so as to ensure secure data transmission.
As such, 42Gears will stop supporting TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 from December 31, 2021.
How will end of support for TLS 1.0/1.1 impact you?
Following the end of support for TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1, old browsers or devices that do not support TLS 1.2 will no longer be able to communicate with our servers. This means that you will no longer be able to manage and monitor those devices using 42Gears’ products.
Any API integration with 42Gears services using TLS 1.0/1.1 HTTP clients will also stop working. Please note that customers using OnPremise versions of our products are NOT impacted by this change.
What are the devices that will be affected by the deprecation of TLS 1.0/1.1 support and what must you do?

What does 42Gears recommend?
42Gears encourages you to upgrade your systems and devices to TLS 1.2, as non-conformance would disrupt services. For any questions that you may have in this regard, please get in touch with our support team by raising a ticket here.
